At this point, I’m checking Steam regularly for free stuff. As games rise to $70 and beyond, it’s easy to settle down with something on the cheap, even if it’s only worth a few hours of my time.

Over on Steam, you can pick up a handful of new games now for free. No matter what genre you’re into, there’s bound to be something here for you.

Mini Warrior Defense Game crossroads

First, we have Competitive TicTacToe, which is just as silly as it sounds, but there is a twist. Described as a “fast-paced strategy title,” the gimmick is that your oldest piece disappears when the board is full. In other words, you need to plan ahead multiple moves, and be ready for your opponent to hit that last piece when the game essentially “resets.” The game also supports “global ELO leaderboards.”

Next up is CUPIES, a 3D platformer starring CU, a little cube who tries to find his friends PI and ES. The levels are full of “absurd dangers that test your sanity.” It’s a bit of an oddball game, with a stark message that highlights its difficulty upfront: “No checkpoints. A reminder to appreciate life. Every mistake is 100% yours… even if the game doesn’t help.”

Mini Warrior Defense is next, and looks straight out of the school of PixelJunk Monsters: “Lead your warriors on an epic adventure to defend your kingdom from invaders – in this action tower defense game, you can use various defense towers, levels, heroes, and many good things to help you destroy enemies.” This one is free-to-play and involves some microtransactions in the form of gems. The user reaction is polarizing so far, with some calling it pay-to-win, and others dubbing it “addictive” or reminiscent of Kingdom Rush.

Finally, we have Spirit-Sealing Tome, “a classic xianxia RPG featuring breathtaking celestial landscapes and legendary sword fights.” It’s a self-described MMORPG where you explore China under the guise of an immortal. Long-term support is planned as “more unique gameplay, costumes, and events.” However, there is no English-language support at the moment.

Steam Always Has Something New And Free To Play

No Matter The Type Of Game

This week, we essentially have a minigame title, a 3D platformer, a tower defense game, and an MMO all being offered at once. There’s sure to be something there for a fan of pretty much any genre, and since there’s no cost involved, everything is easy to try out.

As we wait for Valve to release the new Steam Machine wave, Steam itself is still readily available, and has become a great resource for perusing free games. It’s hard to believe that it’s been around for nearly 23 years. The real question is if Steam will still be on top 20 years from now. Epic Games will certainly try.
